Friends of African Village Libraries relies heavily on donations from people like you. The benefit of giving to an organization like Friends of African Village Libraries is that a little money goes a long way in rural Sub-Saharan Africa. The establishment of a library costs only $4,000, and it means that hundreds of village children and adults will gain access to books. Since FAVL is a small organization powered by dedicated volunteers, overhead costs are extremely low. This means that your money will be spent on buying books, installing solar panels to supply light in reading rooms, and contributing to the cost of construction of new libraries.

For our Canadian donors:
FAVL has established a reciprocal partnership with the Osu Children's Library Fund, Canadian Charity Registration #88 990 4264RR0001. Canadian donors can send donations by cheque or money order in Canadian dollars, made payable to Osu Children's Library Fund, directly to OCLF, 188 Montrose Street, WINNIPEG MB R3M 3M7. Online one-time or monthly contributions to FAVL can be made to OCLF through Canada Helps, (a not-for-profit organization with a secure web site). Please note on the cheque that the funds are for FAVL projects. A Canadian tax receipt will be issued from OCLF and you will also receive a confirming letter from FAVL

We appreciate and need your generosity!

And when we say that your gift goes a long way in Africa, here is what we mean:

$10 Covers the purchase of two new African novels, or other valuable reading material
$50 Pays for a six month subscription of a nationally-read newspaper for the library
$50 Covers a year's cost of a librarian's monthly trip to the city (including two hours of internet time per trip), which allows the librarians in Africa to email, keep in contact and report on the library's situation to FAVL.
$100 Covers one librarian's salary for two months. The librarian works half-time, and is therefore paid half the salary of a schoolteacher.
$500 Covers the cost of locally purchasing an entire shelf of dictionaries, atlases, and other educational material for students.
$500 Pays for the purchase of bookshelves, tables and chairs for a library
$1,200 Covers the cost and installation of solar panels for a library. Solar energy is a sustainable and environmentally-friendly way of providing light in the reading room after the sun sets at around 6 p.m.
$2,500 Covers the refurbishment of a building to be used for an entire new library.
$4,000 Covers enough to establish a new library... your donation will be the founding donation.
